Simply put, Emergent Films is about having a plan.  We want to change the landscape of filmmaking in S.C.–as many have wanted to do for more than two decades.  Unfortunately, there’s been very little progress during that time–at least as it relates to establishing an ongoing, year-round industry. 

We at Emergent believe that the foundation for change 1) has to come from the private sector and 2) must grow from the ground up. 

The first point simply means that we cannot and should not rely on state government (namely the S.C. Film Commission) to do all the work for us.  That’s no knock on the Film Commission, but rather our firm belief that such dramatic change requires far more people than the Film Commission will ever employ. 

The second point is the most critical and the one that has seemed the hardest for many people to grasp or be willing to embrace.  Growing the industry from the ground up takes time–probably a long time.  Over the past 20+ years, several people/groups have lobbied for a Hollywood-caliber studio.  Every one of these ventures that I’ve encountered required A LOT of somebody else’s money to build a “dream facility” in hopes of establishing S.C. as Hollywood East.  As you might expect,  none

of those ventures were able to materialize.

Genesis Studios is a very cool place.  We’ve got a lot to offer.  But in its current incarnation, it’s still very much a starting point on the road to where we want to go.  We’ve got 7 acres of land that is itching to be expanded upon once the demand for larger studio space is clear.  In the same way, we in this industry have got to put our best feet forward with some quality films to demonstrate to investors and distributors that we can, in fact, deliver the goods.
